Loran Keuning is a freelance sound designer for picture based in The Netherlands.
At a young age, Loran was already immersed in music and sound. He began singing in a choir at just five years old, and by the age of 11, he was performing complex classical pieces like Bach’s Mattheus Passion. As a teenager, he started composing music, and during his student years in his twenties, his passion shifted toward sound design. He brings his extensive musical background into his work, applying key elements like tonality, flow, and suspense to his sound design with a musical perspective.
In 2024, Loran graduated from HKU Music & Technology in Utrecht, The Netherlands. During his studies, he focused on a creative, conceptual, and artistic approach to sound design, while independently studying and practicing many of the technical aspects. During an internship at the award-winning sound design studio Studio Vermaas, he was introduced to the fast-paced world of the film industry. Following that experience, he worked on numerous side projects, collaborating with student teams as a sound designer for short films and games. In his research papers, Loran explored the impact of sound on movie audiences and how sound can be used deliberately to affect the subconscious. His graduation paper on creative surround mixing, along with his research, led him to his current specialty: background ambience editing.
Today, Loran is a freelance sound designer with a broad skill set, including dialogue editing, foley mixing and editing, ADR mixing and editing, as well as technical skills like sound effects library management and studio management, including routing and soldering audio cables. His passion and specialty lie in sound effects editing, where he feels his creativity and abilities can be fully utilized.
